Miss Tuskegee University to appear in Ebony magazine

TUSKEGEE, Ala. - Miss Tuskegee University, Breana Watkins, will be included in the September 2011 HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) Queens issue of Ebony magazine, according to the university.

Watkins, along with a number of other campus queens, competed in an online voting competition. Voters were able to view the queens’ respective biographies and videos stating why they should be featured in the issue of Ebony. The top 10 winners were chosen for the publication.

Watkins, the 82nd Miss Tuskegee University, is a junior from Huntsville, Ala., majoring in chemical engineering. She is the daughter of Derwin and Tina Watkins.

Other queens chosen were: Neshaszda Brown, Albany State University; De'Jonique Garrison, Clark Atlanta University; Ashley N.

Former Essence Magazine editor visits Tuskegee

TUSKEGEE, AL (WSFA) - Former Essence Magazine editor-in-chief Susan Taylor visited Tuskegee.

The Essence of Healing program was in conjunction with the National CARES Mentoring movement started by Taylor. The National CARES Mentoring movement is the most highly regarded and effective brand in the black mentoring arena.

With 57 mentor-recruitment circles throughout the nation, National CARES is addressing the great disparity between the significant number of Black children in need of mentoring services and the relatively few Black adults who are aware of this needed call to service.

Taylor was the driving force behind Essence Magazine for nearly 30 years.

Info fair punctuates spouse celebration -- Maxwell AFB

5/13/2011 - MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala -- Maxwell-Gunter honored spouses during the Spouse Appreciation Day celebration May 6 at the Maxwell Event Center. The theme for this year's event was "You're Our Inspiration, Now Let Us Be Yours."

Spouses gained information, tips and ideas by touring the booths of various on- and off-base vendors, including beauty consultants, fitness experts, educators, financial consultants, spas, counselors and home improvement specialists from around the River Region.

Essence of Joy Alumni Singers to perform at Tuskegee

TUSKEGEE, Ala. — The Essence of Joy Alumni Singers will perform at Tuskegee University in the University Chapel on Saturday, March 19 at 7 p.m.

The Essence of Joy Alumni Singers, under the direction of Dr. Anthony T. Leach, perform sacred and secular music from the African and African-American tradition. The choir, founded in 2005, is composed of alumni of the Essence of Joy Choir of The Pennsylvania State University. EOJAS has performed extensively in locations such as Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Florida, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Washington D.C., Belgium, Luxembourg, and France. EOJAS is an official Alumni Interest Group (AIG) of the Penn State Alumni Association.

EOJAS' mission is to learn, present, and promote African and African-American sacred and secular music in an effort to entertain, inspire, affirm and unify the worldwide community.

Montgomery, Ala. — More than 200 live music venues and 17 attractions are listed in the tourism brochure, “100 places to hear live music in Alabama." The publication was unveiled  during the Year of Alabama Music press conference at the Jazz Hall of Fame in Birmingham.

Some of the venues listed in the brochure include Birmingham’s Old Car Heaven, Bottletree and Ona’s Music Room, Anniston’s Peerless Saloon, Little Willie’s in Tuscaloosa, The Hangout and Lulu’s in Gulf Shores, Veets and Dahlia’s Electric Piano Hall in Mobile, Tuscumbia’s Rattlesnake Saloon, On the Rocks in Florence and the Alley Bar in Montgomery.
