VictoryLand to continue Christmas charity

VictoryLand to continue Christmas charity

SHORTER, ALA — December 9, 2011  — VictoryLand may not be the brightly lit, bustling place it used to be this Christmas. But the Christmas spirit is still alive and well. The company will continue its holiday tradition of providing toys to needy children in Macon County this year.

The company will hand out toys on Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. (in the main lobby) to the children of Macon County.

Unfortunately, some out-of-work former employees of VictoryLand will find themselves on the receiving end of the tradition this year instead of helping others as they have in the past.

Victoryland looks to restore liquor license

Victoryland looks to restore liquor license

SHORTER, AL (WSFA) - Macon County's Victoryland gaming facility is seeking a permit that would allow it to sell liquor once again.

The facility surrendered its license to the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board more than a year ago as it worked to keep agents from entering the facility without search warrants.

The ABC Board confirmed that initial paperwork has been filed by Victoryland.

The permit could be approved by October, but the exact date is unknown because Victoryland is currently waiting on the Macon County Commission to approve the request. The ABC Board is also waiting on additional paperwork before approving the permit.

Victoryland's permit request is "Special Retail More Than 30 Days" and would be valid for one fiscal year: October 1 to Sept. 30.

The liquor license would apply ONLY to the simulcast betting area of the facility.

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Hyundai Motors Manufacturing America makes the cars and sells them to customers. Thursday, they turned the tables, becoming the buyer.

The company then donated the vehicles to the drivers education programs at schools in Montgomery, Bullock and Macon counties. They'll be used at teaching tools to make about 2,000 students safer drivers each year.

Hyundai says the cars were, in some cases, replacements for cars donated to the systems a few years ago.
