Sessions will be held on the second Wednesday of the month from 12 - 1 p.m.

Charles Gomillion: Crusader for Equality
TUSKEGEE, AL– Tuskegee Institute National Historic Site will present the program “Charles Gomillion: Crusader for Equality” on Saturday, June 15, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. The program will be held at “The Oaks”- home of Booker T. Washington and will focus on the dedication of Gomillion who served as the President of the Tuskegee Civic Association (TCA) for 22 years. Formed in 1941, the TCA was a group dedicated to civil rights, voter education, and community welfare in Alabama. Poll tax and graded literacy tests were used to keep blacks from registering to vote in Alabama, including Tuskegee which was known for its education of blacks at Tuskegee Institute. Gomillion was officially on the faculty of Tuskegee Institute from September 1928 until his retirement in May 1971. One of the most significant Supreme Court decisions of the early 1960s was Gomillion vs. Lighfoot.

Air Force Maj. Gen. Walter D. Givhan talks value of education with TROY grads

 

MONTGOMERY—U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Walter D. Givhan, a Troy University alumnus, told TROY graduates that education will help them deal with new challenges and demanding situations as they move forward with their careers.

Givhan delivered the keynote address to graduates during spring commencement for the Montgomery Campus on Monday, May 20, inside the Davis Theatre for the Performing Arts. Some 140 students took part in the 7 p.m. ceremony.

In all, 192 students earned undergraduate and graduate degrees this spring at the Montgomery Campus.

Lt. Governor Ivey launches 'Ending Child Hunger in Alabama' campaign

Lieutenant Governor Kay Ivey will launch the “Ending Child Hunger in Alabama” campaign at Wares Ferry Road Elementary School in Montgomery, Monday, April 29, 2013, at 10:00 a.m.. “Ending Child Hunger in Alabama” is the first initiative of the newly established Hunger Solutions Institute at Auburn University. Lieutenant Governor Ivey serves as the campaign spokesperson.

With nearly one-third of Alabama’s children living in families that experience food hardships, the goal of the campaign is to move Alabama into the top 25% of states with the highest degree of child food security by 2020.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day set for April 27

ADMH is encouraging the public to participate in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day by safely discarding of unwanted and unused prescription drugs at collection sites throughout the state. Take Back Day will be held this Saturday, April 27 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Local collection sites can be found by visiting www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/drug_disposal/takeback/index.html. The service is free and anonymous, with no questions asked.

This effort represents the sixth opportunity in three years to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs. The DEA, as well as state and local law enforcement, collaborate to offer the initiative. Last September, Americans turned in 244 tons of prescription drugs at over 5,200 sites.

2013-14 AUM cheerleading information announced

Auburn University at Montgomery cheerleading coach Amanda Brasington is seeking interested individuals for the 2013-14 Warhawks' Cheerleading squad. Tryouts will be held from Friday, April 26 to Sunday, April 28 in the AUM Wellness Center.

In order to participate in the tryout, individuals must be a full-time student enrolled at AUM and must have an overall cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher. Freshmen or transfer students must have been accepted to AUM by the first day of tryout clinics and must bring their letter of acceptance in order to tryout.

Required information to bring to the tryout include: a physical form, tryout agreement and waiver, a tryout information sheet, a photo copy of your insurance card and a $40 cash or check (made payable to AUM Cheerleading).
