Macon County's unemployment rate for March

Macon County's unemployment rate for March

Alabama Department of Labor Commissioner Tom Surtees announced today that Alabama’s preliminary March unemployment rate remained unchanged at 7.2%. March 2012’s rate was also 7.2%. March’s rate represents 155,071 unemployed persons, compared to 154,790 last month, and 156,224 last year.

In Macon County, the unemployment rate for March was 9.6%, down from 9.8% in February and down from 9.9% a year ago.

“This month we continued to see the labor force grow, which tells us that more people are re-gaining confidence in the job market. We also saw the number of people with jobs grow by nearly 7,000, with only a slight increase in the number of unemployed,” said Surtees. “Even though the rate didn’t decrease, these are still positive signs.”

The civilian labor force increased in March to 2,164,497, up from 2,157,556 in February and 2,156,362 last year.

Tuskegee City Council approves Public Works Employee pay raise

TUSKEGEE, AL (WSFA)- Nearly all 19 public works employees turned out to see if Tuskegee city council members were going to listen to their demand of a raise. And they did, voting unanimously to raise the average base hourly rate from $7.72 to $8.50. They also voted in favor of the increase going into effect the next pay period.

"It was long overdue for it. Now is the time. We have achieved what we wanted so I feel pretty good about it," Tuskegee service maintenance worker Dontae Brown said.

Brown says the raise will take him from around $16,000 a year to $18,400. He says it took a strike to get the raise and he's grateful for the council's decision.

"And hopefully in the near future, we can get the rest of it and that way you won't even anybody wanting to disregard or leave their job," Brown said.
