More than 900 students and teachers expected to be in Montgomery for HOSA Conference this week

Health-related careers are expected to be a popular occupational choice in the future. According to data from the U.S. Department of Labor, the total employment rate for health services managers alone is expected to grow by 22 percent (2010-2020).
 
More than 900 students and teachers travel to Montgomery this week to participate in two days of competitive events and advanced leadership study at the Alabama 2013 Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) Leadership Conference, February 7-8. Students attending this conference at the Renaissance Montgomery Hotel and Convention Center will have an opportunity to participate in more than 45 different competitions and workshops.
 
Currently, the national HOSA organization has over 100,000 members throughout the United States. Alabama has approximately 4,000 members.

The Alabama Municipal Electric Authority Scholarship Program currently accepting applications

The Alabama Municipal Electric Authority (AMEA) Scholarship Program offers 2 (per Member city), $2,500 scholarships on behalf of Alexander City, Dothan, Fairhope, LaFayette, Lanett, Luverne, Opelika, Piedmont, Riviera Utilities, Sylacauga and Tuskegee.

Applications are currently available from school counselors in AMEA Member cities.  Applications can be filled out online, but must be printed, signed and sent to the AMEA.

AUM Women's soccer to host winter camp in February

The Auburn University at Montgomery women's soccer program and the Jamey Newsome Soccer Academy will host a two-day Winter Camp on February 16-17, 2013, at the AUM Soccer Complex.

The event is open to girls ages 15 and older and features a specifically designed curriculum that will feature only the best and most effective techniques available. All instruction will be conducted by college coaches who will put you through the paces of a typical college preseason routine. Campers will play with and against current and former AUM Soccer players, who are there to show you what the next level is all about, while giving you the chance to become more familiar with the elite college level. All coaches will be available after each session to answer any questions you may have on a "one-on-one" basis.

The Academy setting will challenge the field players in attacking skills, speed of play, and quick decision making through small-sided, 11 vs. 11 matches.

The Auburn University at Montgomery men's soccer program and the Wulf Koch Soccer Academy will host its annual College Prep Camp, a two-day camp and clinic, on February 2-3, 2013, at the AUM Soccer Stadium.

The event is open to boys ages 15 and up and provides an opportunity to become more familiar with the elite college level. This camp has a specifically designed curriculum and will feature only the best and most effective techniques available. All instruction will be conducted by college coaches, who will put campers through the paces of a typical college pre-season routine.

Huntingdon offers seminar for prospective teachers

The Huntingdon College Teacher Education program and Huntingdon's student chapter of the Association of School Curriculum and Development will host Yes! You Can Teach!, a seminar for high school students who plan to become educators and for current educators who want to encourage students to enter the teaching profession, Tuesday, January 15, from 9:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. on the College campus.  More than 230 high school students and educators from across the state are expected to attend the event, which is hosted in partnership with the State Department of Education and Alabama Association of School Curriculum and Development.  Dr. Tommy Bice, Alabama State Superintendent of Schools, will speak during the opening general session beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Macon County BOE announces partnership with EPA's Energy Star Program

Macon County Board of Education today announced they have joined EPA’s ENERGY STAR program as an ENERGY STAR partner. Macon County Board of Education, through its voluntary partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR Program, will work to improve energy efficiency and fight climate change through a strategic, corporate energy management program that will enhance the organization’s financial health and help preserve the environment for future generations.
