Tuskegee student elected vice president of national architecture organization

Jennifer Taylor, a senior from Montgomery, Ala., will serve as vice president for the American Institute of Architecture Students. The architecture major at Tuskegee University was selected in December during the organization’s annual meeting in Savannah, Ga. As part of her duties, Taylor will work and reside in Washington, D.C. to represent students from accredited architecture schools in the nation. After graduating in the spring, she will begin her one-year tenure and also serve on several national committees such as the National Architectural Accrediting Board and school accrediting teams.

“I chose to run on a national level because the AIAS chapter at Tuskegee really gave our students a voice and we created about three first-time events which allowed our students to gain more professional development,” Taylor said.

Governor Kay Ivey proudly announced that Alabama leads all states with fifty teams registered to compete. The participation represents a significant increase from nineteen teams who registered in the first state competition in 2012.

The fifty teams, from thirty-two Alabama High Schools and the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, will compete in an aviation challenge or a new surface challenge category added this year.

The teams, made up of 3-7 students, must conceptualize and design a Small Unmanned Aircraft System or design and evaluate efficiency improvements for a baseline tractor trailer. The students must also develop a business plan in support of commercial applications.

Tuskegee University closing in on SIAC championship

TUSKEGEE, Ala. (October 30, 2012) —After winning seven consecutive games, the Tuskegee University Golden Tigers are one game away from playing for the SIAC football championship. In their way is the only other team that is undefeated in conference play: the Golden Bears of Miles College.

Tuskegee will play for the SIAC West Division Championship Saturday against the defending SIAC champion, Miles College in Fairfield, Ala. A win could essentially add two major games to this year’s schedule, with a third trip to Atlanta looming at Lakewood Stadium Nov. 10. The winner of Saturday’s game will play the winner of the SIAC East Division Championship (also on Saturday), which will be played in Columbus, Ga. between Fort Valley State (7-2 overall; 5-1 in SIAC with one conference loss coming to Tuskegee) and Albany State (6-3 overall; 5-1 in SIAC with one conference loss coming to Miles College).
