Scientist explains the possible demise of Earth and Milky Way galaxy

Scientist explains the possible demise of Earth and Milky Way galaxy

TUSKEGEE, Ala. (October 25, 2012) — Renowned astrophysicist, John C. Mather, shed light on some of the mysteries of the universe during a lecture at Tuskegee University Wednesday. In a detailed and entertaining lesson to a packed audience in the ballroom of the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center at Tuskegee University, the winner of the 2006 Nobel Prize in physics explained the evolution of the universe, from beginning to end.

Mather is a senior astrophysicist and senior project scientist for the James Webb Space Telescope at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. Although, Mather’s work in measuring cosmic background radiation helped to prove that the universe is expanding and made the Big Bang theory plausible. Mather said the Big Bang theory is not the definitive explanation for the universe’s expansion.

Homecoming celebrations blend Tuskegee's rich military heritage

In a dramatic and graceful start to this year’s homecoming game at Tuskegee University, the latest alumnus to become a general received the game ball from the Silver Wings Aerial Demonstration Team from Fort Benning in Georgia. The ecstatic crowd in Cleve Abbott Memorial Stadium repeatedly shouted “U.S.A.” as the last member of the parachute team floated down on the field to deliver the ball to Brig. Gen. Mark A. Brown and Tuskegee president, Gilbert L. Rochon, on Saturday, Oct. 20. The Golden Tigers went on to obliterate the efforts of the Kentucky State University Thorobreds in a 37-0 blowout.

Brown had not been back to Tuskegee for about 10 years and said his return to campus was “inspirational.” He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1986 and was also commissioned through the Air Force ROTC program.

Alabama State Troopers Remind Motorists of School Bus Safety

Alabama State Troopers Remind Motorists of School Bus Safety

It is a priority year-round, but school bus safety is particularly important during the school year, when motorists come into contact with school buses on a daily basis.

This year, School Bus Safety Week is Oct. 22 to 26, and the Alabama Department of Public Safety is partnering with the Alabama Department of Education to remind motorists of the law and what is required in an effort to prevent crashes, injuries and fatalities.  In 2011, there were 546 crashes, 268 injuries and five fatalities involving school buses in Alabama.

Motorists may be aware that the law requires all traffic from both directions on a two-lane roadway to stop when school buses stop for passengers, but there also are rules to ensure safety in other situations.

Traffic from both directions must also stop for school buses on:

• Roadways with two lanes and a center turning lane

• Roadways with four or more lanes and a center turning lane
